ASCENT+ Status by Giorgos Fagas – ASCENT+ Coordinator

The ASCENT+ Team wishes you a Healthy and Creative 2022!

Looking at past year’s achievements despite all the challenges encountered, ASCENT+ looks into the New Year with renewed optimism and anticipation.

The ASCENT+ Transnational Access (TA) Programme allows academics, postdocs and postgraduate students, technologists and industrial researchers and SMEs/Start-ups to have access to free-of-charge state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise at five major European RTOs.

Since our launch of the ASCENT+ TA Programme in February 2021, we have received 80 enquiries and there are already over 30 Transnational Access projects that in the pipeline (28 approved). These offer access to the ASCENT+ toolkit for nanoelectronics to 30 organisations in 17 countries in Europe and Asia. Hoping seeing you soon benefiting from ASCENT+ too!

The Joint Research Activities (JRA) are progressing well with very interesting results already, some of which have been published in leading journals. These can be found at the ASCENT+ outputs repository. As this activity grows and matures the outputs will be used to update and enlarge the ASCENT+ toolkit offering. Watch this space!

Our ASCENT+ community has also grown to include around 600 members in all five continents. We launched our social media channels which now reach 800 followers. We specifically introduced the ASCENT+ Community Research Focus to showcase research and technology breakthroughs and to disseminate valuable news to/from the whole ASCENT+ community on a different focus topic each month. We ensure that your Community news reach the right people in all corners of the world!


 


Quantum Dot Platform

Quantum technologies is one of the main pillars that can be addressed with the ASCENT+ toolkit. In this newsletter, we feature the site-controlled quantum dot platform that is offered by Tyndall and is based on leading expertise in MOVPE growth (see video).

The Tyndall quantum-dot platform opens the possibility to use classical integrated photonic technologies and devices for quantum applications.

Flashlight: ASCENT+ Offering

Open micro-chamber/thermal extractor for material outgassing tests

From the very beginning, Fraunhofer IISB has been working on methods for the control of ultra-clean manufacturing processes and ultra-trace analysis. Typical applications of these methods are the contamination control of manufacturing process including the corresponding equipment and process media as well as the control of manufacturing environments (e.g. cleanroom, mini-environments). With feature sizes shrinking, thinner layers, new materials, 3D integration, thin wafer technologies and more complex designs, contamination control is a constant challenge and a prerequisite for a continuous quality control and achieving high yields in the manufacturing processes. As a rule, outgassing tests of equipment components and materials used are common during the development phase. The use of the microchamber shown offers the possibility to test material samples up to a temperature of 250°C.
