7th ASCENT Newsletter – October 2017
ASCENT Research Accelerator Programme for PhD Students
Closing date today Friday 20th October 2017 …
The Research Accelerator Programme gives PhD students an on-site introduction to the technology available in the three partner sites. This will give students a clear insight into how they can use ASCENT to accelerate their own research.
First Call:
PhD students are invited to apply for up to six places to visit imec in Belgium where they will be introduced to the ASCENT access programme and attend advanced training in nanoelectronics reliability techniques over four days. Further opportunities will follow in the two other partner sites early in 2018.
Apply here now before it’s too late:

Dr Elias Aperathitis applied to ASCENT in 2017. He visited Tyndall National Institute in Ireland in October and brought his Zinc Oxide samples to carry out analysis using the Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) & Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Working alongside Michael & Brendan in the lab the results look very promising.

ASCENT 5th Workshop
MOS-AK Meeting at ESSDERC 2017 (Leuven, Belgium)
The 5th ASCENT Workshop was part of the MOS-AK Workshop on Monday 11th September in Leuven, Belgium. Prof. Jim Greer, Julie Donnelly and Thomas Chiarella gave talks on the various aspects of ASCENT during the Workshop and there was great interest shown by the attendees in the access on offer.
MOS-AK plays a significant global role in the sharing of information related to compact modelling. It has built a community with global connections by promoting standardisation of compact models and its implementation into software tools, connecting national and local modelling groups at European level and building strong bilateral ties with similar organizations around the world. MOS-AK conducts regular meetings with European industry and academia to exchange information on the strengths and weaknesses of the industrialisation of the compact models.
The most recent MOS-AK Workshop was held on 11th September during the ESSDERC 2017 conference in Leuven and had over 30 attendees. ASCENT partners gave presentations explaining how ASCENT access can allow the community to work on the challenges encountered with sub-20 nm technologies. The overall objectives of the programme were outlined followed by details on how to apply and the selection process involved. Thomas gave a detailed description of the technical aspects of the technologies on offer and showed examples of different projects undertaken so far.
As well as participating in the Workshop, ASCENT was also present at ESSDERC 2017 with an exhibition stand. There was strong interest on the ASCENT offerings, with many attendees signing up to become members of the ASCENT community.
ASCENT Updates
New Webinar Series
We are planning to host a series of webinars to engage directly with ASCENT Network members.
The ASCENT team at Tyndall National Institute in Ireland will deliver a 30 minute presentation followed by an opportunity to engage through emailing into the session for the questions & answers.
We will outline the technology and infrastructure on offer at all three partner sites, imec in Belgium; CEA-Leti in France and Tyndall in Ireland while also giving examples of projects which have already been delivered through the programme.
